Syphilis is an STD (sexually transmitted disease)

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum, the most common symptom is a painless ulcer in the genital region. Patients who transmit syphilis are those with the disease in the primary or secondary stage, especially if there are active lesions in organs sexuais.A primary stage of syphilis is the best known and is characterized by the presence of a genital ulcer, which is called chancre, an injury that lasts 3 to 6 weeks and disappear even without treatment, leading to spontaneous healing false impression.
Weeks or months after the disappearance of the chancre, syphilis comes back a while, now in a secondary phase, may cause injury to skin and mucous membranes. If left untreated, the lesions disappear spontaneously again, returning some time later in the form of tertiary syphilis, the most serious manifestation of this disease. The incubation period, ie the time between infection and the onset is on average 2 to 3 weeks. However, there are cases where this interval may be as short as three days or as long as three months.
Patients may be several years, even decades, asymptomatic patients in the latent phase before a new recurrence of the disease. This new phase, when the symptoms return, is called tertiary syphilis, the most severe form of the disease.
Tertiary syphilis presents three types of events:
- Goma syphilitic = large ulcerated lesions that can affect the skin, bones and internal organs.
- Cardiovascular Syphilis = involvement of the aorta, causing aneurysms and aortic valve lesions
- Neurosyphilis = affects the nervous system, washing dementia, meningitis, stroke and motor problems by spinal cord injury and nerves (read: UNDERSTAND THE stroke - stroke) .The diagnosis of secondary, tertiary or primary syphilis, already in phase later, is done through two serological tests: VDRL and FTA-ABS (or TPHA).
